Mouth Guard

A mouthguard is a dental appliance, typically worn to protect the teeth and surrounding tissues from injury, especially during sports or activities with a high risk of impact. They can also be used to prevent teeth grinding (bruxism) or as part of treatment for sleep apnea.

Functions:

    • Protecting teeth and soft tissues:
Mouthguards cushion the impact of a blow to the face, reducing the risk of broken teeth, cut lips, tongue injuries, and other oral damage.

  • Preventing bruxism (teeth grinding):
Mouthguards can help prevent the harmful effects of teeth grinding, which can lead to worn enamel, sensitivity, and even TMJ (temporomandibular joint) problems.

  • Treating sleep apnea:
Some mouthguards are specifically designed to reposition the jaw and keep the airway open during sleep, which can help alleviate sleep apnea symptoms.

  • Protecting dental work:
Mouthguards can safeguard braces, retainers, and other fixed dental appliances from damage.

Types of Mouthguards:

  • Stock mouthguards:
These are pre-made and readily available, offering a simple and inexpensive option but potentially less optimal fit and protection.
  • Boil-and-bite mouthguards:
These are heated and then molded to the teeth, providing a better fit than stock guards but still less customized than custom-made options.
  • Custom-made mouthguards:
These are fabricated by a dentist based on an impression of the teeth, offering the best fit, comfort, and protection.

Who needs a mouthguard?

  • Athletes:
Mouthguards are essential for anyone participating in sports with a high risk of head or facial impact, such as football, basketball, hockey, and many others.

  • Individuals who grind their teeth:
Bruxism can lead to dental problems, and a mouthguard can help prevent or mitigate these issues.

  • People with TMJ disorders:
Mouthguards can help reduce the pain and other symptoms associated with TMJ.

  • Individuals with sleep apnea:
Mouthguards can be used to treat sleep apnea by helping to keep the airway open during sleep.
